Aidu Water Sports Center, the Estonian Mining Museum in Kohtla-Nõmme, as well as Lake Uljaste, Liimala beach, RMK hiking trails, and cycling paths. With a guide, you can hike to Sirtsi bog or visit the Alutaguse bear watching hut.
KIVIÕLI ADVENTURE CENTER – an adventure park for the whole family and a winter ski resort
In winter, Kiviõli Adventure Center offers downhill skiing and snowboarding, as well as snow tubing and cross-country skiing trails. In summer, there are plenty of activities in the exciting family adventure park. Here, you will find an oil shale mine, zip-lining, a fire academy, a traffic park, a high ropes course on poles, a bike park, and several playgrounds.
AIDU WATER SPORTS CENTER – canals and hiking trails
Aidu Water Sports Center attracts visitors with its turquoise lagoons and various adventures both on water and land. Estonia’s best and most challenging hiking trails are located here. Motorsports enthusiasts are also welcome.

- SCOOTER TOUR AROUND KIVIÕLI
Kiviõli is a young settlement, born nearly a century ago during the explosive development of the oil shale industry, on what was once an empty field. Over time, the environment has transformed and is now full of mysterious traces of activity. On this nearly 10-kilometer scooter tour, we will visit some of the most interesting old places, remnants of now-forgotten structures, and experience the vast environmental changes with nearly all our senses.

- KIVIÕLI THREE PEAKS HIKING TOUR
Old, older, and newer – three artificial hills standing side by side, waiting for adventurers! On this approximately 6 km trail, we’ll go up and down three times. Each time, we’ll take in the view from the top and see how nature is reclaiming the hills. We’ll also explore why, despite their names, these aren’t classic ash hills and discover where the real ash hills are!

- GUIDED CYCLING TOUR IN THE AIDU QUARRY REGION
To cycle through industrial landscapes, your bike should have off-road tires. Depending on their age, the roads in the former quarries are either gravel or soil-covered. On our tour, we’ll visit three former surface mines – Küttejõu, Aidu, and Kohtla quarries. Today, they are adventurous areas with interesting terrain.
On the shorter route, we’ll pass Sipelgamägi and Püssi ash hill, and we’ll see what the former worker settlements of Kiviõli and Püssi look like.
On the longer route, we’ll also take a look at Kohtla-Nõmme and its tailings piles. A lunch break is recommended at the Estonian Mining Museum.

- GUIDED CYCLING TOUR “IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE NARROW-GAUGE RAILWAY”
Nearly a hundred years ago, it was possible to take a train from Sonda to the shores of Lake Peipus. Half a century ago, the operation of this narrow-gauge railway was discontinued. Today, we’ll ride bikes on the former railway embankment from Sonda to Sirtsi. Along the way, we’ll listen to the guide’s fascinating stories about the railway era and observe how nature and human activity have shaped the area.

- SNOWSHOE HIKE IN ULJASTE BOG
A mysterious bog and a shimmering lake nestled between hills – Uljaste welcomes nature lovers. There’s a reason why this area has been designated as a landscape protection area. This diverse region is home to Ida-Virumaa’s highest natural peak and small bog lakes, one of which is graced by a tiny island. Our hike will take you to explore all of this. As a bonus, we will also visit the wreckage of a plane shot down during World War II!

- HIKING TOUR ON ULJASTE COMET-ESKER
Now you’re probably wondering, what is a comet-esker? Is it related to a space rock that has fallen to Earth? Not quite, but it is a remarkable remnant from the Ice Age, rich in history. We will hike along the Uljaste esker, read its history from the landscape, and recall the legends of the narrow strip of land embracing the lake, along with the region’s history.

- HIKE ON THE WILD KÜTTEJÕU HILLS
The forgotten former Küttejõu oil shale quarry is older and smaller than Aidu, but it is all the more mysterious and less traveled. We will explore the hilly landscape with its fascinating fishbone excavation patterns and naturally regenerating nature.

The former Aidu quarry spans over 30 square kilometers, where the entire surface was displaced during oil shale mining and returned as limestone gravel. The resulting artificial landscape is unique—hilly, with steep climbs and descents, and deep canals. We will hike through the most beautiful and fascinating spots in the old quarry.

- QUICK SURVIVAL TRAINING IN NATURE
Things can go wrong, and times are uncertain. Any knowledge of how to act in problem situations is priceless during a crisis. During our adventurous two-hour training, we’ll cover both theoretical and practical aspects of essential survival gear, building a protective shelter, and making a fire. Afterward, you’ll likely look at your backpack and outdoor gear with a fresh perspective.

TULIVEE CENTER with a harbor and restaurant
The museum at Tulivee Center, located on Liimala beach, tells the story of extensive bootlegging that took place along the Estonian and Finnish coasts during the 1920s and 1930s. It houses Estonia’s largest collection of original items related to bootlegging.
